Lessons from a Funeral

You would hardly think a funeral would be an event you would walk away from feeling inspired. But that is exactly how I left the funeral of Matt Chatfield. There will be things rambling around in my head I’m sure for the next several weeks about this funeral. But let me just leave you with two thoughts that I feel are really important. These two things will definitely be my theme words for 2016 and I challenge you to join me and making them a priority in your life.

My word for 2015 was integrity. It was my goal to be able to look back and feel like I faced the challenges of that year with integrity. And for the most part I think I did but that will certainly be a lifelong goal for me.

One thing that was said about Matt is that he treated everyone with value, everyone from an offender to a coworker. I believe that is an unselfish thing to do and I want to be that unselfish. Because everyone does have value, no matter what their circumstances are, no matter what choices they’ve made, no matter if their opinions are different than mine, we all have the same value.

And wow…… the way I saw our community come together for this family is something I can’t even put into words. We were created for community, and I don’t mean Facebook community. We were created for face-to-face community. But what if we came together as a community for everything? Things that might be out of our wheelhouse, not just the comfortable communities we are used to being in. I’m going to try to be a part of different communities this year. I don’t know what that looks like or will be but I feel it is important to step out of my comfort zone and live out my faith in other places.

I invite you to ask people outside of your comfortable community to join you in doing something. Think about how different our prison system might be if we treated all offenders with value, genuine value, not just rules enforced value. Probably most people who are in trouble with the law grew up never being valued….who knows just a kind word to some one at the grocery store or any where in your day might make some one feel valued.

I had a couple teacher ask me to sit with them at the funeral and you have no idea how valued that small thing made me feel……really! I came home feeling so good and able to face some of this weeks challenges with a renewed spirit just because of that small gesture.

Would love to have you join me this week and I hope you know I value each of you….because we are all created equal 🙂
